the First Poem

A merry, unexpected light shone down on me:
The sun, all brilliant gold and framing blue,
On days now set toward the dark,
Where somber clouds hold sway.
Unlooked-for come,
To me.
To me?
Unsought, ignored –
Where inner darkness thrived
On self and her pursuits, hell-bent –
The Son, all brilliant love and humble grace,
A mercy: unexpected Savior reached for me.
